Dusty Spraque with a bass on fly

This winter weather has made it tough for fly fishers.

However, patience and versatility pays off.

January 29th I had the pleasure of a visit from Dusty Sprague. Having FFF Master Instructor Dusty Sprague on the front of my skiff is always a treat and a learning experience. Just watching the expertise of Dusty making pinpoint casts into the mangroves is poetry in motion. So effortless, so precise in movement.

Dusty and I tried the flats to no avail, no sun, high winds. So we moved up the river to some small protected bayous and creeks and found few largemouth bass willing to eat.

FLY FISHING TIP : For bass, as with flats species, deep presentation and slow movement is required to be successful.Jon Grimes - Trout on Fly

Jon Grimes

A few days later I had the pleasure of guiding Jim Grimes along with his son Jon and his fishing buddy Don Grubb. Again, slow presentation as necessary for success. We poked around on some inside flats and found a few holes which held some speckled trout. We caught a few trout on a snook destroyer fly and bass assassin blurp shad.

Oh well, be versatile and adjust your gear according to the target species and there is still fun to be had by all.
